Private Label Packaging That Does Not Look Like an Afterthought

Labels, tags and packaging are the cheapest part of your order and the first thing a customer touches. Here is where to spend and where to hold back.

Packaging is usually the last line item discussed and the first thing a customer experiences. It is also, relative to the garment, remarkably cheap. Getting it right is one of the highest-return decisions in a small apparel order.

The label stack

Woven neck label. The traditional choice, and still the most premium-feeling. Damask weave gives the finest detail. Minimums are typically 500–1,000 pieces, and they are cheap enough that ordering ahead across multiple styles makes sense.

Printed neck label. A direct print inside the collar. Cleaner against the skin, increasingly expected in premium tees and hoodies, and cheaper than woven. The downside is that it fades over years of washing.

Heat transfer label. The standard for activewear where a woven label would irritate. Thin, flexible and durable if applied correctly.

Care label. Legally required in most markets and frequently treated as an afterthought. Get the content right for the territories you sell into — fibre composition, care symbols and country of origin are the usual requirements.

Hang tags

A hang tag is the cheapest brand storytelling you will ever buy. Uncoated stock at 350–400 GSM feels considered; glossy laminate reads cheap unless it is doing something deliberate. Consider printing something on the reverse beyond a barcode — a short line about how the product was made costs nothing extra and gets read.

Attach with a cotton string or a custom-printed safety pin rather than a plastic tagging gun barb if you want the detail noticed.

Polybags

Necessary for protection in transit, and an easy sustainability win. Recycled LDPE, biodegradable options and paper mailers are all available. If you are moving to paper, test it first — it protects against dust but not against moisture.

Print your logo on the bag if volumes allow. Minimums are usually in the thousands, so this may be a second-order decision.

Where to hold back

Custom printed boxes for individual garments look expensive because they are, and they inflate shipping volume significantly. Unless you are shipping direct-to-consumer at a premium price point, the money is better spent on fabric weight.

Lead time impact

Woven labels and custom hang tags take 10–20 days to produce. If they are ordered when bulk production starts, they will not delay you. If they are ordered when production finishes, they will delay you by three weeks. Raise packaging at the same time you approve your sample.
